The new cataract surgery is quite different from even ten years ago.

First the surgery starts with Femto second laser which makes all the incisions in the eye in a matter of seconds and precisely in the right place. Secondly the laser makes the capsulorexis( a tiny incision in the Outter membrane of the cataract). Following that the laser divides the cataract into pieces and emulsifiers the cataract into mushed particles which are then easier to remove from the eye with phacoemulsification tip(like a tiny vacuum cleaner). After further vacuum cleaning the folded up implant( a carefully calculated lens) is inserted with a shooter into the eye.

The incision is then hydrated with saline. A small amount of antibiotic and antiinflamatory is then inserted in the eye. Following surgery the patient can walk out and resume his normal activities shortly.

There is no pain. The patient is checked the next day!

The implant that replaces the cataract after the cataract operation is complete has undergone some radical changes. First of all it can correct for astigmatism. 54% of patients have a significant amount of astigmatism. If this astigmatism is not corrected the patient will never have a good uncorrected vision. This is one of the major goals of the new cataract surgeryi.e. To eliminate for the most part. The second new thing in implants is the development of refractive optics. The corrections on the implants are igzacly one wave front apart. This allows the designer to put one, two, or even three correction on one implant thus allowing the patient to one, two, or three different distances. These distances could be near, far, or in between.
